Q: There’s a project I know I’m ready to lead. How do I tell my manager?
One of the biggest career mistakes I see is waiting for someone else to recognize your potential. Visibility doesn’t happen by accident. Sometimes your manager simply doesn’t know you’re interested unless you tell them.
Schedule a one-on-one conversation instead of bringing it up casually in passing. Share your interest confidently and connect it to the value you’ll bring.
You might say:
“I’d love the opportunity to lead the next project. Based on my experience managing cross-functional work and delivering results, I believe I’m ready for that responsibility. I’d appreciate the chance to discuss what opportunities may be coming up and what success would look like.”
Be prepared to support your request with examples. Talk about projects you’ve contributed to, problems you’ve solved, relationships you’ve built, and outcomes you’ve delivered. Focus less on why you deserve it and more on how you’ll help the team succeed.
If your manager says you’re not quite ready, don’t leave the conversation discouraged. Ask, “What specific skills or experiences would you like to see me demonstrate before leading a project?” That question gives you a roadmap instead of a rejection. Sometimes the difference between staying where you are and earning your next opportunity is simply raising your hand.
