Q: I want to pivot, but this job market is crazy. How do I start?
The headlines can make anyone nervous. Layoffs, hiring freezes, and stories about hundreds of applicants are enough to make people postpone their goals. But don’t confuse a challenging market with an impossible one.
A successful career pivot starts with clarity, not applications.
Before you update your resume, ask yourself what you’re actually moving toward. What type of work energizes you? Which industries are growing? Which of your current skills transfer into that new space?
Once you’re clear, align everything with your target role. Your resume, LinkedIn profile, networking conversations, and interview examples should all tell the same story.
Then focus on building relationships. Many people spend hours submitting online applications while spending almost no time networking. Reach out to professionals in your target industry. Conduct informational interviews. Attend industry events. Let people know what you’re pursuing.
Most importantly, don’t try to pivot into five different careers at once. A focused strategy is much more effective than applying to every job that sounds remotely interesting.
The market may require more patience than it did a few years ago, but it also rewards professionals who are intentional, prepared, and consistent.
