Q: I keep hearing about the September hiring surge. What is it, and how do I prepare?
September is typically a time when hiring starts to pick back up. Summer vacations are over, decision-makers are back in the office, and organizations are looking at positions they want to fill before the end of the year.
Does that mean a flood of jobs is coming just because it’s September? No. And I definitely don’t want you applying to 50 jobs this week just because someone on social media told you there’s a “surge.”
What I do want you to do is get ready.
Take another look at your resume. Does it show what you’ve accomplished, or does it just list what you do?
Pull up your LinkedIn profile. If a recruiter landed on it today, would they understand what you’re good at and the value you bring?
Reconnect with your network. Reach out to former colleagues, mentors and professional contacts. Let people know what you’re looking for. Some of the best opportunities never start with clicking “Easy Apply.”
And please don’t wait until you have an interview on Thursday to start preparing on Wednesday night.
Know your story. Know your wins. Have examples ready that show how you lead, solve problems, work with others and get results. Most importantly, practice saying your answers out loud.
I actually created a free 5-Point Interview Ready Checklist to help you do exactly that. Use it before your next interview to make sure you’re not just hoping you’re ready. You’ll know you’re ready.
The September hiring surge isn’t a guarantee. Think of it as a reminder: the year isn’t over, hiring isn’t over, and neither is your opportunity to make a move.

Because the September hiring surge isn’t a guarantee. Think of it as a reminder: the year isn’t over, hiring isn’t over, and neither is your opportunity to make a move.
If you’ve been telling yourself you’d get serious about your job search after summer?
It’s after summer. Let’s go.
