ASK COACH LANI: How do I regroup and what do I do next?

I failed my professional exam. How do I regroup and what do I do next?

First, I want you to know this: failing a professional exam can feel devastating. Especially when you sacrificed time, money, sleep, confidence, and poured so much of yourself into preparing for it. It can make you question yourself in ways other people do not fully understand.

But one exam does not get the final say over your future.

Take a few days to feel what you need to feel. Disappointment. Frustration. Embarrassment. Anger. All of it is valid. But do not stay there too long. You regroup by refusing to let one moment convince you that you are incapable.

Then get honest about what happened. Not to beat yourself up, but to adjust your strategy. Did you need more structure? More practice questions? Better time management? More rest? Less isolation? Sometimes it is not about intelligence at all. Sometimes people are exhausted, anxious, overwhelmed, or trying to carry too much at once.

And please stop telling yourself that this means everyone else is ahead of you. Life is not a race with one timeline.

This month there was a law school graduate in the news who passed the bar exam on her fifth attempt. Fifth. And at the end of the day, nobody introduces her as “the attorney who failed four times.” They call her attorney.

That is the part people forget.

Your story is still being written.

One setback does not erase your talent, your education, your experience, or your purpose. It simply means you have to regroup, refine the plan, and keep going.

You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to be disappointed.
But do not count yourself out.
