Question:
My job just posted internal promotions, but I don’t think they’ll select me. Should I even apply?
Answer
Yes. You should absolutely apply.
And more importantly, we need to talk about why you think you won’t be selected.
Sometimes that feeling is based on real signals. Other times, it’s you counting yourself out before anyone else has the chance to.
Here’s the reality. You don’t get considered for opportunities you don’t put your name in for. Deciding not to apply guarantees the outcome you’re trying to avoid.
Now, that doesn’t mean apply and hope. Be strategic.
First, assess your readiness. Do you meet most of the qualifications? Can you clearly explain how you’re already operating at the next level? If the answer is yes or even close, you’re in the game.
Second, position yourself before and during the process. Talk to your manager. Express your interest. Ask what they would need to see from you to support your promotion. This is not the time to be quiet.
Third, apply even if you’re not the “perfect” candidate. Internal promotions are not just about checking boxes. They’re about visibility, trust, and perceived readiness. Applying signals that you see yourself at that level.
And let me add this. Even if you don’t get it, applying gives you valuable information. You get feedback. You understand how decisions are being made. You position yourself for the next opportunity instead of being overlooked completely.
Don’t disqualify yourself. Make them make the decision. Then use the outcome to move strategically, not emotionally.
