My workplace is leaning heavily into AI, but I haven’t been encouraged or trained. How do I catch up without feeling left behind or exposed?
You cannot wait to be tapped on the shoulder for this. Your career development is your responsibility. Not your manager’s and not your organization’s. You should expect support, but they should not be the reason you fall behind.
The professionals who stay relevant are the ones who move early, even when no one is holding their hand.
Start small and stay consistent. Find a short course to take. You do not need to master everything overnight. Pick one or two tools that are relevant to your role and begin using them in low risk ways. That might be drafting emails, summarizing documents, or organizing ideas. The goal is familiarity and confidence.
At the same time, be visible about your learning. Ask thoughtful questions in meetings, share insights with your team, or mention that you have been exploring ways to use AI to improve efficiency. That positions you as proactive and engaged, not behind.
And do not let fear of being exposed stop you. Everyone is learning right now. The difference is some people are taking ownership of their growth and others are waiting until they feel fully ready. That moment rarely comes.
Start where you are and build from there.
