ASK COACH LANI: How do I continue to grow in a space that no longer feels invested in me?

How do I continue to grow in a space that no longer feels invested in me?

First, trust what you are noticing.

Sometimes people stay in denial for too long because they want things to go back to how they were. But when an organization stops investing in you, it usually shows up in patterns:
• Opportunities stop coming your way
• Development conversations disappear
• Your work is overlooked
• You are no longer being stretched or challenged
• Leadership seems disengaged from your growth
• You feel stagnant instead of supported

That can be painful, especially if you have given a lot to the role or organization.

But here is what I want you to remember: their lack of investment does not mean you stop investing in yourself.

Do not shrink just because the environment got smaller. If you are concerned that you may hit a ceiling, there are steps that you can take. In my YouTube video, I share a few tips to navigate this situation.

This is the season where you become more intentional about your own development:
• Build skills outside of work
• Strengthen your network
• Increase your visibility
• Find mentors or sponsors elsewhere
• Attend conferences or trainings
• Explore stretch opportunities beyond your immediate team

And practically speaking? Keep your resume updated and your network warm. Do not wait until you are burned out, blindsided, or desperate to reconnect with people or start documenting your accomplishments.

Career maintenance matters even when you are not actively looking.

And emotionally, stop waiting for constant validation from people who may no longer be equipped or willing to give it.

That does not mean become bitter.
It means become strategic.

Sometimes growth looks like blooming where you are planted. And sometimes growth looks like realizing you have outgrown the environment entirely.

Also, be careful not to internalize organizational stagnation as personal failure. A lot of talented people stay stuck because they assume if leadership is not investing in them, they must not be valuable.

That is not always true.

Some environments only know how to use people, not develop them.

Continue sharpening your skills anyway.
Continue building relationships anyway.
Continue preparing for your next level anyway.

Because even if this space is no longer positioned to grow you, it does not mean your growth is over.
