You Don’t Have to Shrink Yourself to Build a Brand

When you have more than one passion, introducing yourself can feel like a test. Do you lead with the business? The creative work? The project you just launched? Before you finish explaining, you may already be wondering whether you sound like you are doing too much.

I’m a recording artist, actress, television host and entrepreneur. Music is part of my world. So are my talk show, Diva Talk Tonite, and my beret brand, TAMZ. Those interests belong to the same woman. I don’t believe we should have to erase parts of ourselves just to make an introduction easier.

But having several interests also comes with responsibility. You have to help people understand what you offer, and you have to do the work behind it. Here are a few ways to approach that without losing yourself in the process.

Find what connects your interests

Before you worry about how to explain every project, ask yourself what you want people to experience through your work. Maybe you want them to feel confident, understood, entertained or better prepared for something in their lives.

For me, performance, conversation and personal style all create opportunities for expression. A song, an interview and a beret are different things, but each gives someone a way to show up and be seen.

Try writing one sentence about the purpose behind your work. Keep it simple enough that you would actually say it out loud. That sentence can help you decide which ideas fit and which ones can wait.

Give people a clear starting point

You can be proud of everything you do without putting your entire résumé into every conversation. If someone wants to book a performer, start with your performance work. If they are interested in your product, explain the product.

That doesn’t make the rest of your experience less important. It helps the other person understand why you are talking to them.

The same applies to your website or social media. Make the next step easy to find. Can someone tell where to shop, watch your work or contact you? Confidence gets attention, but clarity helps people act on their interest.

Let a new venture teach you

Being experienced in one area does not mean you will automatically know everything about another. You can be comfortable in front of an audience and still have questions about running a product business.

Give yourself permission to ask those questions. Learn what your customers need to know. Pay attention to the details that affect their experience. Make sure what you promise is something you can deliver.

For a woman starting something new, there can be pressure to look like she already has every answer. You don’t need to perform perfection. You need to be willing to learn and follow through.

Choose what gets your attention today

Having several goals doesn’t give you several sets of hours. Every project needs time, and enthusiasm alone won’t organize your calendar.

Choose a concrete priority for the week. It might be finishing a proposal, preparing for an interview or improving a product description. Make the task specific enough that you can tell when it is done.

An idea can matter to you and still wait its turn. Setting it aside for now does not mean you have given up on it. It means you are giving the work in front of you a fair chance.

Keep your voice in the room

Advice can be useful, but you still have to recognize yourself in what you create. Read your introduction out loud. Look at the message behind your brand. Ask whether it sounds like you or like someone you think you are supposed to become.

I embrace my Diva identity. To me, that confidence comes with showing up, preparing and taking my work seriously. There is room for personality and professionalism together.

If you are building something while carrying more than one dream, give yourself room to grow. Be clear about what you offer. Be honest about what you are learning. Take the next manageable step.

You can have a big vision and start with one finished task. And you can build something people understand without making yourself smaller in the process.
