In Her Mother’s Shoes

Kennedy Wayne is not your average 10-year-old. Following her mother’s legacy of uplifting young girls, Kennedy founded G.L.O.W. Girls! (Girls Leading Our World) to instill in girls the power to advocate for themselves and be anything they want to be. Let’s meet her.

 Where are you currently based.

I am currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia

What age group can benefit from your organization and are girls in other locations able to participate online from wherever they are?

Glow Girls age from 5-13, and girls can participate online by visiting http://www.dewgirlpower.org

Besides providing a framework to empower females, how has your mother inspired you to be an advocate for young girls? Did you see something in your own friends or classmates that was missing for many young girls coming up today?

My mother inspired me to advocate for girls like me since I was little. I witnessed my mother volunteer coach and uplift the young girls and seeing the girls go through so much from not listening in school and having self-image issues. I wanted to be a therapist and be just like her. I knew that she worked with much older girls so I decided to focus on the much younger girls, because I can get them and understood what was going on in their head and heart. So, I knew we wanted to be Supergirl but scared to fly. I wanted to help my girls to fly and soar high.

What are some of the programs your organization offers?

Girls Leading Our World is an organization that creates and operates innovative programs to mentor girls to advocate for themselves and make their communities stronger.

My first book is a coloring book that is all about building young people’s confidence, self-esteem, imagination, and spirit! It seeks to remind and inspire girls and boys that they are worthy, intelligent, unique, and enough. The characters are unique because I was able to pick these characters for my first book. The young man, is my 13-year-old Uncle Christian, the second character is my best friend Jihan, and the other two characters are my two cousins Nyomi and Baliee.

Tell about your upcoming book, “What Can I Be? Kennedy’s Careers from A to Z.”

What Can I Be? Kennedy’s Careers from A to Z is an inspiring and easy-to-read alphabet picture book that teaches our next generation about careers. Inspiring the younger generation to follow their dreams and be anything they want to be. Creating a better world for today and tomorrow. I also want my generation to know that you can have multiple careers, just like my mom and dad. They both have roles as entrepreneurs, educators, counselors, military and law enforcement, my parents inspire me daily.  I teamed up with my cousin who is the illustrator. I love evolving my family.
