What led you to start a business of your own?

Starting my own law firm was a decision fueled by a deep desire for autonomy, both personally and professionally. At the age of 40, after years in a high-stress corporate job at a bank, I realized that the environment was significantly impacting my mental health, contributing to my depression. This realization prompted me to reevaluate my career path and life goals.

The transition from corporate life to entrepreneurship was also driven by my role as a mother of three children. Starting my own firm offered me the flexibility I needed to balance my professional aspirations with my family life effectively. It allowed me to be present for my children in ways that a traditional 9-to-5 job would not permit.

Moreover, I’ve always harbored an entrepreneurial spirit. Even as a child, I was drawn to opportunities that allowed me to take initiative and lead. I recall begging my mom to sign me up for Girl Scouts—not for the camaraderie but for the chance to sell cookies. That early experience was a clear indicator of my innate desire to build and grow something of my own.

Creating my own law firm was about more than just escaping the stress of my previous job; it was about designing the life I wanted to live. It was about not having to live on someone else’s clock and being able to make decisions that best suited my personal and professional needs. I wanted to build my own empire, leveraging my skills and passion to create something meaningful and lasting.

In essence, starting my own law firm was a leap towards fulfilling my entrepreneurial dreams, designing a lifestyle that aligned with my values, and taking control of my professional destiny. It was a step towards building something I could call my own, something that would stand as a testament to my dedication, hard work, and vision.

Tell our readers about your family life/career outside of your business.

At 30, I uprooted my life in the suburbs of Philadelphia to venture out on a new career path. As a single parent of an eight-year old, I moved to North Dakota on a full tuition waiver to begin law school. My dedication paid off, as I graduated fourth in my class, Magna Cum Laude, and I returned to Pennsylvania to pass the bar exam on my first attempt. Shortly thereafter, I formed my law practice, Dana Blue Law, which continues to grow.

Outside of my law practice, I navigate parenthood with my blossoming 20-almost-21-year-old-daughter, while also embracing the unique journey of raising fraternal twins (age 10). I model professionally, including for designers in both seasons of NYFW in 2023. When I can, I enjoy moments of tranquility sipping hot tea with lemon, engaging in yoga and Pilates, and immersing myself in the wealth of culture and arts that is Philadelphia.

I also recently published my first children’s gratitude journal, currently available on Amazon here: Daily Gratitude Journal for kids: Fun prompts and engaging activities to cultivate a heart full of gratitude and a mindful of positivity https://a.co/d/dEwRnSH.
