Cheryl Magazine Is the Moment: How Cheryl Polote-Williamson Is Redefining Women’s Media

In a world where women’s voices are shaping the future of media, Cheryl Magazine stands as a radiant example of what happens when women champion one another. Founded and led by the incomparable Dr. Cheryl Polote Williamson, Cheryl Magazine embodies the strength, grace, and brilliance of women telling women’s stories — boldly, beautifully, and unapologetically. This feature is more than a celebration of a publication; it’s a tribute to the power of sisterhood in media, the impact of shared purpose, and the unstoppable force of women supporting women. Let’s meet her…

The Vision of Cheryl Magazine

Cheryl, what inspired you to launch Cheryl Magazine, and how did you envision it standing apart from other women-centered publications?

The inspiration was deep in my spirit. I really wanted to write a love letter to Black women—the everyday woman. I looked around and saw so much focus on celebrity or chasing trends, but where was the beautiful, substantive space dedicated just to the woman who is faithfully showing up for her family, her job, and her community? I knew we deserved a 120-page piece of art that was all about our holistic empowerment- mind, body, and spirit. We don’t just aspire to be seen; we need to be affirmed. Cheryl Magazine is that affirmation, making sure every Black woman knows her story is worthy of print.

The tagline of Cheryl Magazine is “Inspiration for the Everyday Woman.” What does that phrase mean to you personally, and how does it shape your editorial direction?

The “Everyday Woman” is my hero! She is the one doing the hard, beautiful, often invisible work. To me, that phrase means you are already enough, and you are already powerful. It’s a loving correction to the narrative that says you have to be famous to matter. It shapes our magazine by pushing us to feature relatability over celebrity. When you open our pages, you are seeing your sister, your neighbor, your spiritual guide—women whose testimonies are practical blueprints for living an affirmed life. We focus on giving her tools, not just temporary inspiration.

Each issue highlights powerful yet often unsung women. How do you and your editorial team go about discovering and selecting these voices?

My heart is drawn to the women who are intentionally creating impact in their quiet spaces. We aren’t looking for the spotlight-chasers; we are looking for the soul workers. Often, they are women who are living out the mission of my non-profit, Soul Reborn, or they come to us through trusted recommendations—my purpose- aligned sisterhood. We ask: “Is her story a teaching moment? Is her vulnerability a gift?” We want the woman who, by sharing her truth, validates another woman’s struggle and shows her the way out. We believe when you lift up the unsung, you remind every woman that her work matters.

What has been the most memorable cover story or feature for you so far, and why did it leave such an impact?

Oh, that’s like asking a mother to pick a favorite child! But the stories that truly move me are the ones of fierce, unyielding resilience. I’m thinking of a powerful feature we did on a woman who had to completely rebuild her entire life and career after hitting rock bottom. She spoke so honestly about using those daily affirmations—literally speaking them out loud to get the strength to start over. It was a raw, beautiful, and profound story that showed our readers that the principles we promote—Mindset, Affirmation, Purpose—they truly are the lifeblood of transformation. That’s why we do what we do.

In a media landscape saturated with quick content, how does Cheryl Magazine stay rooted in grace, class, and style while still keeping a pulse on modern culture?

We stay rooted by being intentional and counter cultural. In a fast-scroll world, we are offering a beautiful place to slow down and savor. Our commitment to grace, class, and style means we prioritize quality over speed. It’s an act of respect for the woman reading it. We address all the real issues—burnout, pivoting, navigating leadership—but we deliver the solutions on a platform that says, “You deserve the very best, sister.” We give her a luxurious, beautiful piece of substance that she can hold onto, refer back to, and use to enrich her life, rather than just consume and discard.

Leadership & Vision

You wear many hats—author, filmmaker, speaker, coach, and CEO. How do you balance the demands of running a magazine alongside your other ventures?

I’ve stopped using the word “balance” and embraced synergy. Honestly, it’s not about separating the time; it’s about recognizing that all my ventures are connected by one purpose: empowering women through the power of words and mindset. The magazine is the platform, the books are the tools, and the speaking is the delivery. I have to live an Affirmed Life to lead one, so I commit to intentionality, rest, and delegation. I have a phenomenal, purpose-aligned team, and I focus my energy only on what serves that ultimate goal.

As the Owner and Editor-in-Chief, what’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in publishing, and how have you overcome it?

The early challenge was convincing the marketplace that a premium, high-quality, 120-page publication dedicated to Black women’s well-being was not just a luxury, but a necessity. In a world that often wants to commodify and cheapen our content, I had to be unwavering and unapologetic about our commitment to excellence. I overcame it by leveraging my media expertise and drawing in purpose-aligned partners who believe in our mission. Our fiercely loyal readership is proof that when you treat a woman with respect, offer her substance, and honor her journey, she will invest in your vision.

What role does storytelling play in your vision as both a media leader and a connector of women to their purpose?

Storytelling is the evidence of God’s grace and a roadmap for purpose. As a media leader, I curate the narrative to ensure it’s one of victory and intentional living. As a connector, storytelling is the bridge that closes the gap between inspiration and action. When a woman sees a sister’s journey laid bare, she realizes: “My mess is a message. My testimony is my superpower.” It shifts her mindset from feeling alone in the crowd to stepping into her own God-given purpose with confidence.

How do you ensure that Cheryl Magazine not only uplifts women but also challenges stereotypes and broadens narratives about womanhood and success?

We challenge stereotypes by showcasing the full, complex, and beautiful spectrum of Black womanhood. We refuse to fit women into one box. We celebrate the CEO who is a fierce activist, the entrepreneur who is an elder in her church, and the woman who defines success by the peace in her heart, not just the title on her door. We feature images of soft power and fierce competence living harmoniously, proving that we are not one-dimensional. We are a tapestry, and we honor every thread.

Community & Impact

You founded Soul Reborn to empower and equip women. How does the work of your nonprofit intersect with the mission of Cheryl Magazine?

They are deeply intertwined, like a seed and the soil! Soul Reborn is the action arm—it provides the hands-on resources, the mentoring, and the financial literacy for disadvantaged women to literally reborn their lives and businesses. Cheryl Magazine is the affirmation arm—it provides mental and spiritual sustenance. The magazine showcases the successes and the leadership examples that Soul Reborn’s clients can aspire to. The work of the nonprofit is the soil, and the magazine is the beautiful sunlight that nourishes the dreams of every woman.

In what ways do you see Cheryl Magazine serving as a mentorship platform for upcoming writers, creators, and women leaders?

The magazine is a silent, quarterly masterclass in intentional leadership. Every profile is a living mentorship lesson in navigating life and business. More tangibly, we actively cultivate talent. We bring in emerging writers, artists, and photographers who share our heart and commitment to purpose-driven excellence. By placing their beautiful work on a platform of this caliber, we are offering them a high-level mentorship opportunity that accelerates their careers and solidifies their self-worth.

What feedback have you received from readers that confirmed for you that the magazine is making a difference?

The feedback that melts my heart is when a reader tells me the magazine was the catalyst for a tangible, real-life change. I’ve heard countless stories: “I read that article and finally launched my business,” or “The daily affirmations got me through my roughest season.” One beautiful sister reached out and said, “I was ready to give up, but the magazine made me realize that my story is actually a gift.” When the content moves from being something read to something that is lived, I know we are fulfilling our divine assignment.

Career & Personal Reflections

Looking across your career—from bestselling books to film production to magazine publishing—what thread of purpose connects all of your work?

The single, most powerful thread is the Power of Words. My entire career is dedicated to using words—whether written, spoken, or filmed—to shift the mindset of women. Words literally create our worlds. My purpose is to ensure that the words my sisters consume, and the words they speak over their own lives, are words of affirmation, purpose, and limitless potential.

You’ve been recognized with countless awards and honors. Which recognition meant the most to you on a personal level, and why?

While every honor is truly humbling, receiving the Maura Award from the Texas Women’s Foundation—the highest award for women helping women—touched me deeply. It wasn’t about a sales number or a film credit; it was a recognition of the mission and the life I’ve dedicated to serving my sisters. To be honored by women for the work of empowering women is the ultimate personal validation that I am walking in my truth.

What legacy do you hope Cheryl Magazine leaves behind for the next generation of women leaders, entrepreneurs, and storytellers?

I hope Cheryl Magazine is remembered as a courageous, beautiful archive that validated the quiet, world-changing triumphs of Black women. I want it to be a compass for the next generation, a luxurious, intentional guide that proves you never have to choose between grace and power, or between style and substance. They can, and must, have both. Our legacy will be the stories that inspired a generation of women to live their truth unapologetically.

How does it feel to know the difference your impact with your magazine has made to so many women who then showed up and showed out to nominate you for this feature (we received 20 responses – all for Cheryl Magazine– and will feature those responses in your feature)?

Oh, my goodness. That’s a beautiful, beautiful gift, and it moves me to tears, honestly. It doesn’t feel like an award; it feels like a confirmation of connected purpose. In this work, you pour out your energy and heart onto the page, praying it resonates. To have 20 beautiful women take the time to affirm the work—that means the exchange of purpose is real. They are pouring their love and faith right back into the mission. It confirms that Cheryl Magazine is so much more than ink and paper; it is a powerful community of affirmed women who are connected, empowered, and ready to testify. Thank you, sisters. Thank you.
