I’ve been in my role for years but keep getting passed over for management. What am I missing, and how do I break through the first promotion barrier?
This is one of the most common patterns I see. Strong performers assume that doing their job well is enough to be seen as a leader. It is not.
At some point, you have to shift from being known as reliable to being known as ready for the next level. That means demonstrating leadership before you are given the title. Are you leading projects? Are you mentoring others? Are you speaking up with solutions instead of waiting for direction? Are you making your impact visible to decision makers?
You also need clarity. Have you explicitly communicated that you want a management role? Have you asked what skills or experiences you need to be considered? If not, you are operating without a roadmap.
And then there is visibility. Not just doing the work, but making sure the right people understand the scope and impact of your work. This is where documenting wins and sharing them strategically comes in. If leadership cannot clearly articulate why you are ready, they will default to someone they can. In my YouTube video on three simple steps to get promoted, I share that if you are not positioning yourself and telling your story, no one else will.
Breaking that first promotion barrier is about intention. You have to position yourself differently than you did to get the role you are in now.
