ASK COACH LANI: How can I stay visible and competitive without sacrificing flexibility?

I work remotely and feel invisible compared to in office peers. How can I stay visible and competitive without sacrificing flexibility?

Visibility in a remote environment does not happen by accident. You have to be more intentional, not more available.

Start by creating consistent touchpoints. That can look like sending concise updates on your work, sharing progress on projects, or highlighting results. You are making your work easy to see and understand without someone having to ask.

Next, use your voice in meetings. Not to speak just to be heard, but to add value. Ask thoughtful questions, offer insights, and contribute to discussions. People remember who adds clarity and direction.

You should also be building relationships, not just completing tasks. Schedule quick check ins with colleagues and stakeholders. Stay connected beyond your immediate assignments. Visibility is tied to relationships as much as performance.

And finally, protect your flexibility by being known for results. When people trust your output, they worry less about where you are working. Your goal is to be seen as someone who delivers consistently, communicates clearly, and stays engaged. That combination keeps you competitive without needing to be in the office every day.
