Dance saved her. It became her safe haven. A place to go when life and the things and people in it weren’t all she had hoped and dreamed. Kirsten Asher is the Founder of Huntress & Co., which is described as, “a movement for women to harness their power and go after what they want without excuse, apology or compromise.” From those early years, she really discovered herself, what she could handle and achieve and who she was at her center-undefined by what happened to her. Now she helps others discover themselves too.
What was the catalyst to your gifts evolving into Huntress and Co.?
Oh, my gifts have evolved from something that I hold very dear to my heart. My childhood was, to say the least, emotionally hard to handle and mentally disturbing. Luckily, I loved to dance and eventually I cleaned the studio to pay for dance tuition so I had the key. When things at home got scary, I would go to the studio and just dance it all out – just the music and me. I later came to find out that this was a therapeutic approach. As I continued to go deeper into body studies from becoming a holistic health practitioner, learning the power of breathwork, eventually becoming a personal trainer, and diving into neurology and body connection, I found my home.
Huntress & Co. has become a way to share all of that with women and branching out to men. The relationship we build with ourselves is one of the most important relationships you’ll ever have and unfortunately, as society has evolved, we’ve put all importance on the mind essentially disconnecting us from our body, intuition (gut feeling), and senses. We’re experiential beings and we’ve cut ourselves off from experiencing the world in ways that we were created to do so.
That is my mission to help people rediscover their relationship with themselves and move outside the box to understand the importance of breath and body connection.
What would you say are the top two focus areas people tend to come to you with and what in your opinion are the reasons so many find themselves struggling with these areas?
People usually come to me to get back into their bodies through various modalities and to learn how to use their breath and movement to unlock stuck energy and emotion that we have a tendency to stuff down and try to forget about.
Our bodies are a library of information and feelings are the first sign that something is or isn’t right or doesn’t align with you. It’s an invitation to dig deeper. We’re not taught how to do this – it’s something that happens when someone comes across an experience that opens their eyes or they hit rock bottom.
Have you seen a pivot in any issues during the pandemic? Tell me about a success story?
It was great to see more and more people outside getting physical activity or turning to those who have tools to share to get into the body and breath. I saw a lot more people seeking out the unfamiliar territory in search of something more.
One of my friends who has dealt with anxiety her whole life came to me in search of just that, something more and feeling disconnected but from what, she didn’t know. Through working together, we were able to reduce her anxiety dramatically and give her tools to practice and use in order to listen to her body and develop that relationship.
In your past highlight reel before being an entrepreneur, what is something that stands out that you find yourself most proud of?
I’m most proud of just going for it. I’ve been a stunt performer, a sales associate, dove into holistic health, moved on a whim (a couple times), etc. I choose not to settle – it’s not an easy road but it’s given me the chance to try things and see what works for me and what doesn’t.
I will try most things once.
What do you do in your downtime to nurture your gifts as well as stay inspired to nurture others?
I get and stay curious whether it’s about myself, a relationship or a situation. I get curious about the natural world and also welcome new information to learn and experience. I think the best thing we can do is to observe ourselves and others with no judgment but to learn.
Every situation is a teachable moment either for yourself or others.
