SHE MOVES!: MEET LONNIE GRANT

In our new female expat series, she moves!, we will introduce you to connected and dynamic women who have taken the map of their life to new heights. Every woman’s reason won’t be the same but they are connected in their journey. Lonnie Grants expat journey took her from the U.S to Indonesia (Bali). Let’s meet her…

What lead to your move? My move was primarily motivated by the impact on my mental health. I no longer wanted to live a high-stress life, always on alert due to safety concerns, bills, and the high cost of living in the U.S. When the acting industry I was part of went on strike, it became clear that a change was needed.

Did it take a long time to feel comfortable with the idea? Did you move alone? It didn’t take long to feel comfortable with the idea once I started fasting and praying. God revealed Bali to me, despite my initial plans to stay closer to the U.S. I moved alone, leaving behind my two adult children.

How would you compare the cost of living and availability of housing from where you were to where you are now? In Atlanta, a two-bedroom apartment cost around $2,700. In Bali, a comparable place costs between $600 to $800. Housing is significantly more affordable here.

Was meeting new people and social groups easy or hard for you? Meeting new people was easy for me. As an extrovert and people person, I enjoy connecting with others. Bali has a diverse community, including groups like Black in Bali, and the local Balinese are warm and welcoming.

Did you have a remote career or were you already retired from work or did you find employment after arriving? I am a digital entrepreneur, running my own online business, which allowed me the flexibility to relocate without needing to find local employment.

What is one pro and one con to making such a major move? A pro is the significant improvement in quality of life. A con is leaving behind familiar places and loved ones, like my children, which was the hardest part for me.

What tip would you give to another female who is considering the same?My tip would be to move quickly if you’re considering it. Prioritize your mental health and well-being.

Any regrets or something you would do differently based on what you know now? My only regret is not making this move sooner, though I trust in God’s timing for everything.

How did the move benefit your wellness overall? The move has had a profound positive impact on my wellness. My mental and physical health have improved significantly. I’ve lost over 40 pounds, and I now enjoy eating quality, pesticide-free food, which has made a big difference.
