On the Go: the Best Skincare Routine for Travelling

While there are many splendid things about travelling, packing is seldom one of them. We usually want to carry everything for the sake of comfort, but we’re all too aware of luggage restrictions, weight, and generally being saddled with too many things when all we want to do is rest. Oh, if only we were sickeningly rich so we could hire someone to carry it all for us! Well, it doesn’t matter.

Just because you’re not Beyoncé doesn’t mean you can’t be perfectly glam and pampered at your vacation! All you need is a few tips to figure out how to be minimalist with your products, and we’re here to provide them.

The dry shampoo trick

If you’re going away for longer than a weekend, you’ll probably need to bring actual shampoo, but we’d still recommend that you pack a little bottle of dry shampoo as well, especially if your hair is anything other than dry. Chances are that you’ll start getting a lot greasier than you usually do because this always happens when you go through the sweaty strain of traveling.

However, pay close attention because here’s the trick with dry shampoo: use it before you get greasy. Yep, use it on clean hair and you’ll find that it works a lot better! It will prevent your hair from getting all oily in the first place, it’ll be easier to comb it through, and it will also give your roots a nice volume lift! We recommend the Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo if you want to splurge, or the good old Batiste (the cherry scented one is divine!) in case you want to save bucks.

Face wipes

Facial wipes are good for not only taking your makeup off, but helping your face stay fresh through the trip. Keep them in your carry-on or your purse at all times because they’re really handy, and pick something like the Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water Cloths because they have added skincare benefits, and work really well when you don’t have the time to wash your face.

Cleanse and moisturize like a pro

If you have a relatively normal skin you can rely on facial wipes and simple water to do the job, but if your skin is sensitive, you will need to bring your own cleanser. Moisturizer is also a must, but to save up on space you can bring something that doubles up as a sunscreen and has high SPF protection. The La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ is a great choice for anyone with sensitive, oily skin prone to irritations, but if your skin is dry then feel free to bring separate products that will hydrate you properly. A combo of philosophy’s Hope in a Jar moisturizer and Shiseido’s Sun Protection Cream WetForce SPF 50+ is great because you’ll be plump, moisturized, and protected from all sides.

Makeup base

You really don’t have to bring a lot of makeup for travel. A few products are all you need to look good, and if you want your face to look flawless then start off with a good base. The first thing you’ll want to pack is a good primer, especially if you tend to sweat or get oily. You need something that will help it all stay in place, and you can go a step further and pick a nice bronzing primer if you want that summery glow to show through even before you get your tan.

The next step if either foundation or BB cream, whatever you prefer. Foundation will give more coverage but it usually requires a makeup sponge or a brush to apply, and BB cream is easy to rub into your face with your fingers but won’t cover major scarring or spots. Whatever you pick, set it with a little blotting powder in your t-zone, or use a setting spray with a dewy finish to give you a nice glow (Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Mist is still a cult favorite).

Bonus makeup

Mascara and your favorite nude lipstick are easy to pack and they’re good basics, and then you can add more to that if you need it. A nice blush is always a great thing to pack, and we recommend gel or cream blushes that you can rub in with your fingers for a natural finish. The Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks is a double duty product that works well for this purpose. A good tip here is to take a small makeup bag and decide that you won’t carry more products than it allows. If you can’t shove that eyeshadow palette in there, then don’t bring it. It’s a good way to limit yourself and make sure you don’t bring too much.

Moisturizing mist

Thermal water and moisturizing facial mist are great products. Do they do anything spectacular? Not exactly, but they are pretty handy products that have the added benefit of simply making you feel more luxurious. They can be used to set your makeup, but they can also be used after a long trip to refresh your skin and relax you.

And of course, pack whatever you can in travel-sized bottles. Get a few of the empty ones at the drugstore and use them to save space. Now, pack up and start enjoying your trip!
