Self-Care in Your Career: How To Stay Healthy When You Work From Home

In many ways, working from home is good for our health. We tend to get more sleep, as there is no commute, and avoid the daily stress of a lengthy car, train, or bus journey at either end of the working day. You may find that you are less stressed and able to balance things more easily, both of which are conducive to better health.

In some ways, however, working from home can have a negative impact on our health, especially when it comes to moving around. To help, we have put together the best ways to stay healthy when working from home, helping you to stay happy, strong, and healthy.

Make Time To Move

One of the main issues that can occur when working from home is a lack of movement. There is a tendency to sit down at the desk and not move until lunchtime.

This is exacerbated by the lack of commute; there is no need for you to walk to work, and this can make the issue worse.

Combat this by setting regular alarms reminding you to get up and move. You could walk around the garden, do some push-ups, or even take a longer walk on your break. By scheduling movement into your routine, you are more likely to stick to it and get your body up and active.

Regular movement also helps improve blood flow to the brain, and so you will find it easier to concentrate on your work.

Avoid Snacks

Another common issue with working from home is the proximity to snacks. This can cause you to put on weight quite quickly, and seemingly with minimal effort. To help with this, try to avoid the urge to snack.

Keep water on your desk, and take a sip whenever you have a craving – sometimes, we are actually thirsty when our brains tell us we are hungry. Keep healthy alternatives nearby, such as fruit or crackers, and make sure you have a healthy, nutritious diet.

If you really struggle, try not buying the snacks at all. If they are not in the house, you can’t have them

Remember To Stretch

Sitting at a desk for hours each day can cause your neck, shoulders, and back to become tense, and this can lead to long-term damage. Schedule in some time to stretch every day, either at the start or end of your workday.

For a really great stretch, watch a short yoga or pilates session on Youtube. This has the added benefit of helping you to stay in shape!

Get Outside

Spending too much time inside can have a negative impact on your physical and mental health, so make a point of heading outside for fresh air at least once a day, even if you are working from home.

Why not create a “commute” for yourself first thing in the morning? Before you settle down for work, walk around the block and back to your house. This can also be great for getting you in a work mindset.

Final Thoughts

Taking care of your health is one of the most important things you can do, and a few simple adjustments will keep you strong and happy for years to come.
