How to Build a Great Homework Station to Improve Productivity?
By Katya Seberson
Here I have listed the three main rules that will make your child more focused while studying.
Rule #1
Face the empty wall.
Kids are easily distracted on their own. They don’t need an extra trigger to daydream and lose themselves in the clouds. Children begin to literally lose themselves in the clouds if their desk is facing a window! If the desk if facing an open space, they will be resting their eyes on something other than books or notes, like the door (waiting for someone to enter) or couch (thinking of sleeping). Make sure the wall is free of pictures or writing. The good colors are off white and cedar green.
Rule #2
Rest feet flat on the floor.
Putting feet flat on the floor is a general recommendation for adults and kids. When feet are on the floor, it provides additional support for your lower and upper back and improves posture. Shoulders automatically move back; heart chakra opens up which creates a wide postural opening. It becomes a lot easier to breathe. When feet are touching the floor, it helps kids to stay grounded and focused. Additionally, it allows blood to flow freely through the body.
At early ages (about 6 – 13) you may need to adjust the height of the chair and table or put a small bench underneath their feet. They will get used to keeping feet on the floor, as they grow older.
Rule #3
Keep everything within arms reach.
Make sure there are ample drawers with labels on them. Invest in a label-making machine. It will teach your kid that everything has its place and make it fun for them. The reason you need everything within reach is because every time they get up, they run a risk of stumbling upon something or someone that will take their attention away from homework. An important principle to practice early is: “Finish what you started.” If you started doing math homework, finish it first and then get up. Here is a sample list of drawers you may need:
Index Cards (Used)
- Pencils, Pens, Markers
- Index Cards (Clear) and Post-it Notes
- Rubber Band, Scissors, Stapler
- Rulers and Erasers
- Clean Paper, Notepads, Folders
- Textbooks
- Notebooks and Binders
- Reference
- Tissue
- Headphones
- WATER BOTTLES (those must be at arms reach and always available)
Perhaps, you want to designate a one special place for water and always make sure water is there before sitting down to do homework.
Additional Suggestions.
1. Agree to have a NO-PHONE during homework policy.
Buy a colorful (or create your own using this tutorial) phone-charging holder. It will hold the phone while it’s charging during homework. Make sure the phone is charging in another room, perhaps where you can see it. Buy a calculator in advance, to eliminate an excuse to use the phone.
2. Create an achievement corner.
Every child needs to have recognition for a job well done and working hard on their grades. A perfect way to gain this is to create an achievement corner on the South wall of the bedroom. According to feng shui, this is the recognition area and is a good place to pin up awards, papers with good grades, letters of recommendation, ribbons or trophies.
3. Buy your kids a globe.
Having a big world map or a globe will promote interest in geography and encourage kids to study. Add a globe in the Northeast corner of the bedroom, if possible.
