A Beautiful Shade of Green

Kirstie Lauren’s mindset has always been rather “green”. Growing up with a mother who put health first shaped her interest in wellness and beauty and a relatives brush with a major illness put her focus on the ingredients in products. Kirstie, also known as The Goofy Mermaid,  wants everyone to make better and informed choices about the products they use and with her new subscription Box called “Beauty Gone Green”, she hopes to help us all do just that.

Where did you grow up?

 White Rock BC, Canada- a small beach town near Vancouver.

 So while other kids were heading to McDonald’s what was teenage Kirstie snacking on?

 Carrot sticks, tomatoes and cucumber curtesy of my mother, which at the time I was totally against, but fully appreciate now. My favorite snack now is homemade popcorn… with coconut oil and pink Himalayan salt. 

 ***Ok, we have to know…where did the name, “The Goofy Mermaid”, come from?

 The “Goofy” comes from my friend and co-founder Mari Draughon, who drives with her left foot, which we call “Goofy.” The “Mermaid” comes from our shared philosophies and love of the ocean, sand and sun! 

 Tell us about your “why”? 

 I wanted to bring something different to the table. I wanted to help motivate others to start making healthier choices by introducing them to green beauty brands that they otherwise wouldn’t have discovered at an amazing price & value. Because let’s face it, beauty products add up fast, so when the cost is lowered it makes the choice easier. Beauty Gone Green gives people the chance discover that green beauty is the way to go.

During your research, did you find it hard to find enough natural  beauty products on the market or find that they were plentiful and just not well known?

There are so many great green beauty brands available, but unfortunately they don’t always get the exposure they deserve. My goal is to introduce people to both the smaller and larger brands, so they are aware of how great the world of green beauty truly is. Some brands that I’m super excited to introduce in the next box are ILI ScrubApple & BearsCOOLA , Amalie Beauty  and The Better Skin Co. among others!

 If my man just left me and I hate my life and need to come over to your house to vent with a bottle of wine and a gallon of ice cream that’s probably a soft  no right? So how do you share your lifestyle with your friends without being too pushy? 

 Hah, definitely not…  I would have the wine and the non-dairy alternative (sorbet) ready and waiting for you! 😉 (only because i’m actually intolerant to dairy). At the end of the day it’s about being mindful and conscious about your daily habits, not about making sure they are perfect choices. 

 What is your overall goal with your business? Would you like to one day have your own beauty line?

 My goal for BGG is to create a ripple effect that helps encourage and inspire others to look more closely at their daily regime and think twice about what they put on their skin. I want to increase awareness on what should and should not be allowed as ingredients in skincare and beauty products. I hope the big conventional brands rethink their current ways of doing things and that I can bring some of the amazing smaller green beauty brands into the limelight, brands that you wouldn’t have to worry about using on your own baby. I want Beauty Gone Green to be a brand that others trust for healthier choices a place that encourages others to adopt these choices… BUT also making it an enjoyable and fun experience at the same time. 😉

My own beauty line? Perhaps one day- right now i’m focused on helping to bring focus to some of the already amazing brands out there!
