She is driven by a mission to help others to become debt free and understand why it’s important to care about your credit. Nakia Calhoun is best known for inspiring others to love and seek God first and to walk in your God given purpose.

Where have you failed? I would say I have failed at trusting people that are not ready to step out with their visions. I always want to believe that others are just as passionate as I am about business and ministry and it would turn out some were not. But now I don’t put a high expectation for others to be excited or to have a great passion as I do about my business or any vision the Lord has given me to birth out.

What would others say is your connection trait? Others would say my connection trait is a desire to help others. It does not benefit me to be selfish with what I do know to help educate others to become successful and to break unhealthy cycles in their lives that are keeping them stagnant. I don’t mind sharing different networks, tools and resources to help someone go to that next level in their vision, business or ministry. It does us no good to hoard the information we have. Why not use it to help build others and get them out of their stuck places.

What is your passion? My passion is to help women become successful as wives, mothers, and entrepreneurs and in ministry. To help women understand balance when it comes to your family especially when you are called to the marketplace and ministry.

Do you ever question whether you’ve actually discovered it yet? At a point in my life I did question if I had discovered my passion because I will was insure of my identity and purpose. When you are unsure of who you are it will always be hard to understand and see what your real passion is. And most of the time that one thing that almost destroyed you in life or that particular thing that make you light up on the inside that you enjoy doing is your passion. You can become so busy and all over the place when you are unsure of who you are and the purpose God has planned for you. I had those moments and it was uncomfortable because I was fulfilling someone else vision while God wanted me to step out of fear and do what I loved.

Looking back at 2019, what do you think women need more of? In 2019 women needed more of a genuine support system. I think most of the time we look for that support system in our families and in our familiar circle of friends that we remain in a box that’s limited. Less of? In 2019 women need fewer distractions. We tend to be busy at times and not productive.

What is one goal you have for 2020? The one goal I have for 2020 is to get all of my books published so that I am able to have products available at business summits and conferences.

  1. What would others say your greatest “connection” trait? Being an empath and intuitive clairvoyant, I feel that most would say my greatest connection trait is being able to sense when women are in turmoil or unhappiness in their life. Then having the ability to easily identify simplistic strategies to guide them on a path that is fitting for them and the direction they would like to go in order to transform it to happiness.

  1. What is your passion? Do you ever question whether you’ve actually discovered it yet? My passion is simple, helping women fulfill their dreams of happiness on their own terms. I won’t say that I found my passion. I prefer to say that my passion revealed itself to me. Reflecting on my 30 plus years in corporate and the relationships that I have built, I came to realize that I have always helped women in some capacity of transformation. It has always been fulfilling to observe when women come out of storms and I held a safe space for them.

  1. What does your self-care routine look like? Self-care is essential to my well-being. Therefore, I have a consistent practice of releasing in my journal feelings that do not serve my higher good . . . I also do the same when it comes to people in my life. I simply release them with love. I have a book that you write one thing each day that makes you happy. I’ve captured some of the most insignificant things to most, like an older couple walking and holding hands, because it makes me happy. Most important is a daily practice of guided meditation – 5-30 minutes – to help me stay centered. While everyone’s interpretation of self-care is unique, I must feel a sense of soul care during my self-care.

In addition to Crystal’s experience, she holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Lamar University in Family & Consumer Science with a focus on Family Studies.

What is your passion? My passion and purpose is to empower girls and women to embrace who God created them to be and live in their truth unapologetically. I know what it is not to live in your truth. I had to heal and learn to embrace who God created me to be. Since then I have been able to pour into others and help them on their journey.

What does your self-care routine look like? Learning to practice self-care was a journey for me that I had to be intentional in practicing DAILY. Self-Care looks different for everyone, but is necessary for everyone. Daily I intentionally have three five minute breaks just to sit and breathe. I don’t do anything for those five minutes but relax. I would feel guilty for saying “NO” when asked to do something if I was unavailable. Now if I don’t have room in my schedule it’s “NO” I won’t be able to do it. Honestly, it feels good to say no because I realize I am choosing me over protecting someone else’s feelings. I have designated a safe space in my home to relax, breathe, pray and read.

Looking back over 2019, what do I think women need more of? I have coached countless of women this year and one thing they all have in common is lacking proper self-care. I always say that self-care looks different for everyone. What work for me may not work for you, but it is necessary that we both practice self-care daily. The keyword is DAILY! Women fulfill multiple roles daily and are often spread thin, but if we fail to properly take care of ourselves spiritually, mentally and physically we won’t be good for anyone. I feel women need less of the “superwoman” syndrome. We can’t be everything to everyone and we are still enough.

What brings you joy? How do you nurture those things? God, my husband, family and serving others! Anything you love you will properly take care of it. I nurture each of them differently because they all require something different. The one thing they all share from me is LOVE. I nurture each one with unconditional love!

“Women understand. We may share experiences, make jokes, paint pictures, and describe humiliations that mean nothing to men, but women understand. The odd thing about these deep and personal connections of women is that they often ignore barriers of age, economics, worldly experience, race, culture — all the barriers that, in male or mixed society, had seemed so difficult to cross.”

Meridith has worked as a principal staffing consultant, corporate talent acquisition advisor, and human capital strategist to hundreds of business managers and executives of some of the most well-known privately owned and publicly held corporations throughout the US and internationally. As an enthusiastic staffing partner and business leader, not only has Meridith developed the trust and respect of several successful decision-makers, but she has also been able to build relationships with thousands of professionals seeking career and business advice.

Her wealth of experiences and knowledge from both sides of the hiring desk allows her the ability to share a unique and in-depth understanding of the workforce complexities and competitive career markets that most professionals face today. Meridith enjoys helping professionals master what it takes to become influential leaders, build high-return professional relationships, and consistently develop functional and financial value in the corporate world throughout the lifecycle of their careers.

Aside from that, Meridith is also passionate about one completely owning his/her life’s visions or goals. Therefore, she shares her knowledge and first-hand experiences of overcoming many of the intricacies often involved in both surviving and prospering along the entrepreneurial journey. She hopes that her insight helps other women avoid unnecessary pitfalls as they are either planning or actively working to become full-time and profitable founders, owners, freelancers, and entrepreneurs.

What would other’s say is my greatest “connection” trait? People tell me that I possess the ability to connect well with others because of my willingness to listen and allow others to be heard. To that point, someone once told me, “You’ve done no volunteer work unless you’ve heard somebody else’s story.” I believe that statement is true on many levels. I believe we all need or want someone to hear and understand our story.  We all need to know that someone cares about who we are, what we’ve been through, and where we’re going. When I meet people, regardless of their social status, I make it a point to listen to what they have to say. I think that’s an important part of building strong foundations and prosperous relationships.

What is my passion? Do I ever question whether I’ve discovered it yet? I love observing and engaging in the journeys of different women and girls who have chosen to pursue their personal goals and GOD given purposes actively. Ultimately, I believe that how we evolve as women has everything to do with how we see ourselves in the world and how we connect with that vision and whatever pulls us towards it.

Yes, I went through several years of trying to understand what truly sparked my fire. Then, at some point, I finally started to let go of societal expectations, unnecessary doubts and insecurities that kept me from pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone, and I started to pay attention to my natural gifts and talents. I started getting in tune with the difference between having to push an idea uphill versus allowing that idea to pull me up the hill. Because I believe that we, as human beings, don’t know what tomorrow brings, I do wonder if what I am doing is all that I should or could do to fulfill my purpose. I wonder if what I enjoy so much can become more. I know I am passionate about speaking, coaching, and helping other women become successful, but I do question whether I’ve finally discovered my complete passion.

What’s the last book (female authors only) that I enjoyed, or that helped me in some way? The last book that I read was ‘Acting Up’ by Janice Bryant Howroyd (Founder and CEO of Apple One Staffing Agency).

I enjoyed her book because I can relate to her on many levels as a black woman, staffing executive, and career and business coach. Her book is a reminder that my dream can become a reality.  It lets me know that my goals of motivating others by sharing a blend of unique, real-life career and business experiences and professional knowledge are realistic.

Looking back at 2019, what do I think women need more? Less? We need more women (of all races and ethnicities, especially black women) in leadership.

We need less traditionalism when it comes to us as women pursuing career and business paths. It’s about to be 2020, and we have more options, so we should be teaching our girls and encourage our fellow women to explore those options.  We’re all unique. The careers we choose to pursue and the businesses we create should reflect those differences.

When is the last time that I said no to something that did not feed my spirit? I’ve learned to trust my instincts, so if something doesn’t excite me enough to get me out of bed or spark my ingenuity in some way, I either don’t do it or put it off to see if my attitude towards it will change. If there are no changes in my attitude, I let it go.

How do I connect, support, and lean on my tribe?  I support those who support me by sharing their business information, referring their businesses, providing platforms that will give them exposure, engaging in collaborative efforts, and by sharing my career and business knowledge, experiences, and professional expertise.

Shiquita Hyman

BLOGGER

Shiquita is a blogger (THE U.S.B / The Unconventional Southern Belle)  originally from Lake City, SC where her upbringing empowered her to at least try to embody all the conventional traits of a southern belle (e.g. gracious, hospitable, charming, etc). On the unconventional side much of her childhood was filled with tomboy adventures, until about 8th grade when she realized heels were good for things other than prancing around the house in a princess costume. From that point, her love of fashion and beauty grew and continues to grow. She graduated with a Bachelors in Psychology from Winthrop University and with a Masters of Applied Psychology from Francis Marion University.

Where have you failed? I’m certain I’ve failed numerous times in my life, but they’re honestly hard to recall. Mainly, because I’ve made a conscious effort to be a habitual seer of the silver lining in all situations. Even if the outcome is not as favorable as I would like, I count it a learning experience as opposed to a failure!

What would other’s say is your greatest “connection” trait? I’ve heard from others, most times, that I’m joyful and engaging. I enjoy people and getting to know them, so I’m always more that likely going to greet people with a smile whether I know them or not!

What is your passion? Do you ever question whether you’ve actually discovered it yet? As you may have guessed from my previous answer, my passion is people! I decided very early on in life that I wanted to study psychology, and through seven years of education and (at this point) nine years into my career, I’ve stuck to that. I love meeting, learning about, engaging, helping, supporting, loving on, and doing all the things with people.

What’s the last book (female authors only) that you enjoyed or that helped you in some way? The last book I read that I really learned something from was Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. Honestly, I shouldn’t say I learned, but rather reading this memoir reaffirmed for me the depth of resiliency of women. The story of Jeanette’s life evokes so many emotions, but it’s a must read.

If you were asked to join a politically based ticket tomorrow, what would your platform be and why? Oh gosh! This is a hard one, but I’d have to say my platform would be easier access to mental health care and encouraging a greater appreciating for maintaining one’s mental health. Too often invisible, mental illnesses are dismissed, and they can be just as debilitating as physical illnesses. With the current state of the world, I believe that our mental health is under a greater degree of stress than ever before. It’s so important to take care of our whole selves.

Looking back at 2019, what do you think women need more of? Less of? I think this is something that has greatly improved but can continue to get better; women supporting other women. Who else understands the experience of woman than other women? I can’t think of a time that I feel fuller or empowered than when I’m with other likeminded women are striving to better themselves and pulling others up with them as they go. One thing women need less of is people telling us what we can and can’t do. It’s (nearly) 2020! Time to let go of antiquated stereotypes!

When’s the last time you said no to something that did not feed your spirit? This is one of the most difficult things for me to do, and I’m working on being more comfortable with saying no. However, the last time I did say not to something that didn’t feed me would have to be letting go of toxic relationships. I can’t say that there is anyone that I harbor any ill will toward, but if relationships aren’t productive, I’ve learned that I can’t be party to them. It’s so hard, but so necessary!

How do you connect, support and lean on your tribe? This is something else I struggle with! I’m very much the listener and I prefer to be leaned into as opposed to leaning into others. However, I’ve learned the importance of letting down my guard, being vulnerable, and releasing whatever it is that burdens me. I really enjoys just spending time with people I love, having real conversations about real things and enjoying laughs. That’s how I’m able to connect, decompress, and open up.

What is one goal you have for 2020? That’s easy; to grow! I want growth in every aspect of my life as a wife, mother, employee, entrepreneur, friend, daughter…everything!

What does your self-care routine look like? Self-care for me involves exercise, music, time alone, a good book, grooming, etc. Any time I’m able to participate in any of these activities is a good time for me.

What brings you joy? How do you nurture those things? Again, spending time with people I love and doing things that I enjoy brings me joy. I enjoy time in nature, specifically the mountains, alone time with my husband (he’s legit my best friend), silly time with our son, and time with my family and friends. I’ve been blessed with so many amazing people in my life so I soak up all the time I can get with them. We’re all so busy which can make it difficult to carve out time, but when we do it’s a party!

Whether building your own or taking a seat, what are bringing to the table? Oooh good question! I would say I bring a fun energy, but also a serious work ethic. I don’t start unless I can visualize the end, and I’m not going to stop until it’s finished.

Kim Brightness

CREATOR AND PUBLISHER

Kim Bright is a writer, publisher, digital marketer, and serial content creator who is passionate about helping others become who God always knew they could be. She is a strong advocate for excellence in Christian living through her online platform, Team Jesus Magazine, and serves as Chief Encouragement Officer (CEO) for her personal brand, Kim Brightness & The Live and Learn Show. In her upcoming book, “Someone Borrowed, Someone Blue”, she authentically shares her journey to overcoming childhood sexual abuse and the exact keys that set her free.

Where have you failed? I failed miserably in my 20’s and 30’s by not recognizing and honoring the “fearfully and wonderfully made” woman God created me to be. As an overcomer of childhood trauma, rejection, and low self-esteem masked by professional success, loving and accepting myself did not come naturally. I had to learn how to live and speak the language of my worth, and I repeated many “grades” matriculating into the woman I am today. And guess what, I’m still living and learning!

Since you don’t know what you don’t know, I don’t judge those years of failure too harshly. I’m very clear now that those years represented my personal journey to the realization of the “Kim” God knew before I was born. It was necessary to heal from every harsh blow of life – heck, to even mend from the blows by my own hands! But the crazy thing about failure is – sure, it stinks like the pungent manure it is, but it’s the very fertilizer we need to grow abundantly in every area of life.

What would others say is your greatest “connection” trait? I’d have to say my honesty. While I think I have a filter, my girls would tell you that I’m very honest and real. If you don’t want the truth, whatever you do, don’t ask Kim LOL!

I don’t know any other way to be than real. My philosophy is that truth is the soil that yields the best love. I can’t really love you if I’m not honest with you – that’s tainted love. And don’t nobody want love or a relationship that’s infected with flattery, phoniness, and lies. I know I don’t.

Looking back at 2019, what do you think women need less of? I hope more women find less silence and more voice in their lives. What I mean by that is – a lot of us don’t say what we mean, and mean what we say. We don’t speak up and own what we want or how we truly feel. For too long, I know I buried my voice out of fear of what others may do or say.  Experiencing a taste of being just a little more vocal, or noticing when you’re silencing your voice will empower all women. Though ending silence and finding your voice doesn’t have to be brash, drama-filled, or take you totally out of character, a confident and sure voice can definitely change your life.
