Nakia (pronounced NA-KYE-AH) Jones shared the truth.
She hadn’t seen the video. Her son showed it to her upon coming home from work. But she watched it. Not one but many times. To make sure she would not be biased in her thinking. And it hurt. The video showed the police shooting of Alton Sterling in Louisiana.
The View from all Sides
She worked in the neighborhoods that looked like the same neighborhood she grew up in. She wanted to make a difference.
And she is also a 20- year veteran police officer. She takes her oath seriously and expects no less of her colleagues. She details her career, her passion for being an officer and the risks involved. But she still took the oath. She worked in the neighborhoods that looked like the same neighborhood she grew up in. She wanted to make a difference. She knew the challenges and the pitfalls of these neighborhoods in which she said she’d serve and protect when she could have easily chosen a “safer” side of town.
“If you are white and you work in a black community and you are racist then you should be ashamed of yourself,” she says during her recent Facebook Live video that has now had over 4 million views. And her calls to action aren’t just for officers. She calls on black people to also look out for each other and stop killing their own, to put down their guns and stop destroying our own communities.
Watch her thought provoking video below and a follow-up interview with WKYC Channel 3 – Cleveland :
Do you agree with Nakia? What are your thoughts on ways to bridge the disconnect between law enforcement and the communities they serve? Mothers how are you broaching these topics with your children? Share your thoughts below.
*Note: The shooting of Alton Sterling was followed by another police involved shooting of Philando Castile in Missouri and the Dallas Police shootings in Texas. CWM sends prayers of comfort and strength to the families and loved ones of all. We must find a better way. There is also word circulating that Nakia was suspended in the wake of her video though we cannot confirm those details.
